How Indian tribes in Washoe County add to the area's economy

The center doesn't just serve the colony's 1,100 enrolled members. It serves any Indian who is a member of a federally recognized tribe.
"At the end of last year, we were over 80,000, so it's more than doubled in the five years since this clinic has been up and running," Wilson said.
Tribal chairman Arlan Melendez said, "If we didn't have our health facility here, most of our people would be using emergency services."
"We use those taxes to pay for various things," said Steve Moran, the colony's director of business enterprises and economic development.
"Here's how we help the local economy," said center director Angie Wilson, who sits on the Nevada Medical Care Advisory Board and is also a member of the national CMS Tribal Technical Advisory Board. "Let's say somebody hurts their knee and comes to see a medical provider and they're going to need an MRI. We don't provide that here.
Because nearly 60 percent of the center's patients are uninsured, such a situation would lead to higher medical costs for other residents in Northern Nevada, Wilson said.

She has used the center's gym to exercise and lose weight.
"They have a lot of real good equipment down there," she said. "The center has helped my health a lot."

It includes a medical clinic, dental clinic, behavioral health services, optometry, medical imaging, diabetic education, ob/gyn services, a podiatrist, a gym and more.
Wilson said the Affordable Care Act especially helps American Indians and Alaska natives and will bring more money to the community. This is because Indians and Alaska natives on Medicaid now and in the future get reimbursed from the federal government at 100 percent, whereas care for other populations on Medicaid will be reimbursed at lower percentages.
These include paying off the health clinic's construction and projects such as a section of floodwall along the Truckee River.
"So what happens is we do a referral out to the Reno community. We have a number of different folks we work with: all the hospitals, all the specialty care providers. But not only do we refer that out, more times than not, we're paying for that care. When that happens, we put money into the local economy."

Edna Johnson, a colony member, said, "Before we just had a clinic and that was all, now we have all kinds of stuff in here."
Also under the ACA, the center can use a portion of its funding to pay some members' insurance premiums on the exchanges. Wilson said this could benefit patients with chronic diseases who don't qualify for Medicaid but can't afford their own coverage and whose care costs would otherwise be borne by the center.
"These are opportunities to provide health care coverage for populations who have the highest percentage of health disparities," she said, adding that the center will soon do mammograms and get a cardiologist. "The New Balance Men Casual
